Small to medium businesses sometimes struggle to find affordable graphic designers, meaning they are often stuck with designing things themselves.

Now, without a lot of experience some of these images and graphics might miss the ‘creative’ mark. They might not look too great and could, in turn, push potential customers away.

You want your creative to stand out and catch the attention of your audience. That’s why we’ve pulled together a little guide to help you with your graphics.

Tip #1 – Start with a colour palette

If you have a great brand already, then your colour palette should already be set. If not, get some inspiration off sites like Pinterest and find a strong colour palette that best represents your business.

Tip #2 – Don’t get carried away with fonts

Stick to 2 or 3 fonts that, again, represent your brand. Have a main font that you use for headlines and titles, then a secondary font that you use for subheadings and copy. Remember, keep it simple.

Tip #3 – Align your objects

Often, if something is not aligned properly it can look odd. Proper alignment is an easy way to give your images a sophisticated and professional look.

Tip #4 – Get Inspired

Keep a folder where you can drag and drop any designs, colours, styles you like. That way you can come back to the folder in the future and get references for any new designs you may need.

Tip #5 – Take advantage of contrasts

One of the best ways to create intrigue visually is by using contrast. This could be contrasting colours on the colour wheel e.g blue paired with orange or yellow paired with purple. Or even contrasting patterns, fonts, images.

Tip #6  – Think about who you are designing for

Who are your audience? Try to appeal to them with creative that will catch their eye. You may have to stereotype here but it’s the most important thing you can do at this stage. Selling cars? Use slick and modern designs. Are you a florist? Consider brighter colours and floral designs.
