We’re starting a new blog series called ‘How To’ where we show you how to step up your game in multiple areas of marketing. And today we’ll be starting with How To: Basic Photo Editing.

So first things first, you shouldn’t be using or publishing a photo that is unedited. That is the BIGGEST mistake you could make when trying to promote your business through photography.

Now you’re not always going to have the budget to hire a photographer and photo editor, which is completely fine. But there’s still a level of professionalism you need to achieve.

Photo editing doesn’t have to be as difficult as people make it seem and even the smallest adjustments can take your images from 1 to 100.

Follow these 4 key steps and see your photos transform into something 10x better.

Crop your images and clean them up

Cropping your photos and making sure your horizon is level is one of the simplest ways to improve your photography.

Adjust your exposure

Under-lit or over-exposed images can be very unappealing to the eye and turn customers away so make sure all your images are properly exposed.

Take notice of the colour balance

Colour balance is making sure the whites in your photos are true whites. This means utilising tools like tint and temperature, colour balance and hue/saturation.

Contrast, shadows and highlights

This is one of the easiest ways to boost your photos. Add more dimension by bumping up the contrast, darkening the shadows and brightening the highlights.

Seeing these all separately might not seem like much of a difference but it’s when you apply all of these critical editing techniques together that you will start to see an upgrade in your photography.

It’s about portraying to your customers and audience that you put effort into everything you do, not just your products and services but your image and brand too.
