Whether you’re an aspiring photographer or you’re planning on hiring one, you probably have a few questions surrounding the profession.
We’ve scoured the internet and categories some of the most commonly asked questions when it comes to photography. And we’re going to answer them all in one place to make it easier for you!
What are the different kinds of photography?
Photography has been around for a very long time, which has allowed it to evolve into hundreds of different genres. Here are a few that crop up often in this modern world:
- Wedding Photography
- Event Photography
- Portrait Photography
- Product Photography
- Fashion Photography
- Architectural Photography
- Travel Photography
- Photojournalism
- Sports Photography
- Aerial Photography
- Stock Photography
What’s the best gear to use?
This is all dependent on the photographer and what they’re shooting. Most photographers will opt for a DSLR camera with a variety of lenses. For example, a fashion photographer will usually work with a DSLR camera and wide lenses whereas an aerial photographer will need a drone to achieve their impressive shots.
Do I shoot RAW or .jpeg?
Again, this depends on what you’re shooting. RAW takes higher quality photos which gives you more freedom when editing in post, however they are a bigger file size which means your SD card will run out of space quicker. Jpeg uses less room due to it’s smaller file size and is great for getting loads of photos on 1 card, but the quality is slightly less.
Which editing software should I use?
Whichever you are most comfortable with. However the industry standard software is Adobe Lightroom and Adobe Photoshop which most professional photographers will use. Other editing applications out there include DxO PhotoLab, Phase One Capture One Pro and Skylum Luminar.
Why should I hire a professional photographer when I can use my phone?
Because they know what they are doing. This is their job and most will have years of experience. They know exactly how to make a subject look good, they have great equipment for high quality images, they know what lighting to use, how to make their model comfortable (if there if a human subject) and how to edit the images properly.
Digital or film?
In this modern age, most professional photographers will opt for digital cameras simply because they are easier to use and more effective for their purpose. But film photography is still common and often used for wedding photography, travel photography and documentary photography.
