Photography is a vital aspect in successful marketing and is a super useful way for businesses to visualise the products and services they offer. Not only that but statistics show that posts with images produce 650% higher engagement than text-only posts.

This blog shares some key do’s and dont’s when taking photos, whether you’re taking them on your phone or camera.

Do’s

1 – Focus

You need to make sure you’re focusing your camera properly if you want crips and clear images. An out of focus subject can look unprofessional and may turn prospective clients away from your business. Allow yourself adequate time to take good photos and ensure you have a couple of great shots that are all in focus.

2 – Experiment

Don’t be afraid to try something new, there’s nothing worse than generic photos that people have already seen elsewhere. Learn to be bold and try something outside the box that will draw your audience in. Our favourite platforms to get inspiration from are Pinterest and Instagram, they really help to spark your own creative ideas.

3 – Use props

No matter what you’re photographing, make sure it has a friend. Using a prop alongside your product can help to show it’s use and what it’s for. You could also use a model to demonstrate it’s benefits.

Don’ts

1 – Touch the lens

Touching your lens can smudge it, cause tiny scratches and make your photos look blurry. So before taking any photos, take a microfibre cloth to your phone or camera lens and clean it.

 2- Be afraid to edit

Don’t want your photos to look amateur? Editing your images can make them look professional in an instant. Some good tools to start using are brighten and contrast, sharpness and saturation. Just be careful not to over do it as this can often lead to you photos looking tacky! Presets are a great way to start and you can find a bunch of free ones online. Spend time every day practicing writing to improve your expression skills.

3- Forget lighting

No matter how fantastic your photos are, bad lighting can ruin them. Look to avoid harsh or direct light and instead opt for indirect and diffused light like near a window. You want your raw images to be bright enough that you’re not having to edit it too much afterwards.
