We’ve scoured the internet and categorised some of the most commonly asked questions when it comes to photography. So whether you’re an aspiring photographer or you’re planning on hiring one, you can find the answers to your most burning questions. And we uncover them all in this blog!
Q1: What’s the best gear to use?
Most photographers will opt for a DSLR camera with a variety of lenses. For example, a fashion photographer will usually work with a DSLR camera and wide lenses whereas an aerial photographer will need a drone to achieve their impressive shots. But it is all dependent on the photographer and what they’re shooting.
Q2: What are the different genres of photography?
It’s been around a very very long time, so it’s no surprise photography has evolved into hundreds of different types. Here are a few that crop up often in the industry:
- Wedding Photography/ Event Photography
- Portrait Photography
- Product Photography
- Fashion Photography
- Architectural Photography
- Travel Photography/ Photojournalism
- Sports Photography
- Aerial Photography
- Stock Photography
Q3: Do I shoot RAW or JPEG?
Again, this depends on what you’re shooting. RAW takes higher quality photos which gives you more freedom when editing in post, however they are a bigger file size which means your SD card will run out of space quicker. Jpeg uses less room due to it’s smaller file size and is great for getting loads of photos on 1 card, but the quality is slightly less.
Q4: Why should I hire a professional photographer when I can use my phone?
Because they know what they are doing. This is their job and most will have years of experience. They know exactly how to make a subject look good, they have great equipment for high quality images, they know what lighting to use, how to make their model comfortable (if there if a human subject) and how to edit the images properly.
Q:5 Which editing software should I use?
Whichever you are most comfortable with. However the industry standard software is Adobe Lightroom and Adobe Photoshop which most professional photographers will use. Other editing applications out there include DxO PhotoLab, Phase One Capture One Pro and Skylum Luminar.
