Ready to get started with advertising on Instagram? Instagram is a great platform for all things digital marketing and advertising – whether that’s through organic content, paid ads and more. As of 2021, Instagram has over 800 million active users and the rate of growth doesn’t seem to be slowing down.

Before we begin, you need to ask yourself if Instagram advertising is right for your business?

Unfortunately, if you’re looking to target the grandparent/ older adult demographic, Instagram does tend to skew towards a more youthful audience. Their largest percentage of users falls into the 18-29 age range and to be more precise that 55% being 18-29 years old then 28% falling between 30-49 years-old.

If this doesn’t sound like your audience then it may be worthwhile checking out a different social media platform to advertise on such as Facebook.

So let’s get going shall we?

Cost of ads on Instagram

You can never get a specific price range and it’s not really a one size fits all. However, the average cost per click for Instagram ads ranges between 50 and 60p. A helpful benchmark but again, it will change depending on auction, audience, competition, time of day, day of week, etc.

Steps to Start Advertising on Instagram

  • Head to Facebook’s ad manager. Your Instagram and Facebook need to be connected for ads to be run.
    1. Set your marketing objective. This could be brand awareness, reach, traffic, engagement, video views, etc.
    2. Define your target audience. This can be based on location, age, gender, languages, demographics, etc.
    3. Choose your ad placements. Because you run ads via Facebook it will automatically set your ads to run there. Make sure to click ‘Edit Placements’ and select Instagram ad placement.
    4. Set your budget and schedule. This is where you pick how long you want your ads to run for and how much you want to spend on them. This is completely up to you and has to fit your budget, but the more you spend and the longer they run the more likely they will perform better.
    5. Create Your Instagram Ad. Once you follow all these steps you can then create the ad/ ads you want to run. This could be a sponsored story, in-feed ad or anything else!
