Good copy is as important as any aspect of digital and traditional marketing. Now it may be the last thing on your mind, or you may not even have the budget, but you need to consider improving your copywriting. Whether that’s for your blogs, social media, website copy, email campaigns – it all matters.
We’ve curated a list of some tips and advice to help you along.
Define and Express Your USP
A USP, or unique selling proposition, is what makes you different from the crowd. Ask yourself why your potential customers should buy from you instead of your competitors? Then once you’ve defined this, try to articulate it in a single sentence. This message needs to be at the center of your marketing. And you may need to rethink them if your social posts or blogs can’t be tied to this particular message.
Benefit > Feature
It’s no good just describing what you’re selling. Focusing on the benefits touches on the needs, wants and emotions of your customers and will resonate with them far better. For example:
“We’ve got news! We have a new social media package.” Gets to the point but is a bit plain.
“Save time and money with our new social media package.” Is far more interesting and actually tells the reader how they’re benefiting.
I’m talking to YOU
While speaking directly to an individual reader might not attract engagement from a wide audience, your specific target audience will prefer it. So write your copy not as if you’re broadcasting news to the world but rather having a conversation with a group of friends who actually care about what you’re saying.
Strong Call to Action
And finally, give something for the reader to do. The aim is to get them to visit your website or blog, or to comment on your post and CTAs do that. For example, in your social posts, you could say something like, “Take this quiz to see… “ and this will drive people to take an action.
Copywriting doesn’t have to be hard. Just put yourself in the shoes of your customer and think about what they would want to hear from a brand they love and trust. Keep it exciting and keep it engaging.
