A great photo can make or break how people view your business. So whether you’re using photography online for your website or social media, or your making posters or signs – your imagery needs to look professional.
Unfortunately, as a small business, you may have the budget to hire a photographer. It’s probably even harder to find someone in the middle of a pandemic as well. That’s why we’ve written this blog! So you can take fantastic photos yourself that actually encourage and entice people to come to your business.
Have a decent camera
And no, you don’t have to have the newest DSLR camera to take a decent pic. In fact, your handy dandy iPhone can take photos just as well, and with a quality high enough to use online and in print.
Learn basic composition techniques
Here’s something you can use every single time without fail to get a good photo – The rule of thirds. This uses a sort of grid, placing your subject on either the lines or dots of the grid. Also try using leading lines to focus a viewer’s eye on the subject.
Light is the single most important thing
Good lighting is vital when it comes to making your pictures look semi-professional. Without it you could end up with a grainy or low quality photo, or even worse a black square. Expose your photos correctly by using bright natural light, never ever shoot in the dark if you can help it.
Get in right in your camera before you shoot
The biggest mistake you can make is shooting without thinking. It’s so much easier to get a good photograph in-camera than having to edit a bad photo to look half-decent. Take your time getting the shot just right and think about all the points we mentioned above.
Editing tips
Now if all else fails and you do need to edit your photo slightly, then there are endless amounts of tools you can use. The main 4 that you want to focus on using though are:
- Brightness/ Contrast
- White Balance
- Crop
- Sharpress
Try getting into the fancier stuff like Curves and you might just make your photos worse.
And with this advice, it’s now time to go forth and shoot! We hope you find these tips helpful and are able to get some great photographs to promote your business.
