Now, before we start. It’s a lot easier to get a good photograph in-camera than taking a mediocre pic and trying to make it better in post.

So if you’re taking photos on your phone that means using proper lighting (window or studio lights), making sure the subject is framed properly and all that good stuff. Taking photos on a DSLR can be slightly trickier but it’s vital you master the basic camera settings such as ISO, shutter speed and aperture.

But, if your photographs just need that little extra piece of pizzazz, then carry on reading for some basic photo editing guidance.

#1 – Adjust your exposure

Over-exposed images or under-lit images can be very unappealing to the eye and could even turn customers away. Make sure all your images are properly exposed by either using an exposure or brightness setting.

#2 – Contrast, shadows and highlights

One of the easiest ways to boost your photos is to add more dimension. You can do this by bumping up the contrast, darkening the shadows and brightening the highlights. Curves is a great tool to do all 3 of these but does take some practice to get used to it!

#3 – Colour balance and tone

You want the whites in your photos to be true whites. How can you do this? By ensuring your colour balance is in check. Utilise tools like tint and temperature, colour balance and hue/saturation to make colours pop in the way they’re meant to.
